The History of Norway Grove Memorial Lutheran Church

A Heritage of Faith

Norway Grove Memorial Lutheran Church was founded on a rich history of faith and resilience, beginning with the first Norwegian settlers in the DeForest area.

The first Norwegians came to the Townships of Windsor and Vienna in 1844. During the next three years, many settlers came here from Sogn, Norway, to the community lying in the northwestern part of the Town of Windsor and the adjoining portion of the Town of Vienna. This region became known as Norway Grove, with its hills, woods and creeks reminding the immigrants of their homeland.

A Growing Community (1847-1949)

  • 1847: The congregation was formally established.
  • 1861: The first church building, the Old Stone Church, was dedicated, serving as a cornerstone for the community for decades.
  • 1883: A significant congregational division occurred, which led to a new era of partnerships. From 1883 to 1890, the Norway Grove Lutheran Church shared a pastor with the Burke Lutheran Church. This partnership was strengthened in 1905, when the two churches formally united to form a joint parish that would last until 1953.
  • 1902: The congregation built a new church building to accommodate its growing membership.

A New Chapter (1949-1959)

A pivotal moment in the church’s history came in 1949 when the congregation voted to move its church building into the Village of DeForest to merge with the DeForest Lutheran Church, however, this decision was not unanimous.

  • 1950: A group of members who opposed the move withdrew from the Norway Grove Lutheran Church to form the Norway Grove Memorial Lutheran Church.
  • 1951-1955: This new congregation began constructing its own church building.
  • 1959: The new church building was completed, marking a fresh start for the congregation.

A Period of Partnerships and Growth (1973-Present)

Over the following decades, the church continued to grow and adapt, embracing new opportunities for fellowship and service.

  • 1973-1984: The church entered a partnership with Faith Lutheran Church of Morrisonville.
  • 1985: The congregation called its first female pastor, a significant milestone for the area.
  • 1992: A major church building addition was completed, providing new spaces for fellowship, education, offices, and improved handicap accessibility on both floors.
  • 2010: The congregation celebrated its 60th anniversary.
  • 2020: The COVID-19 pandemic introduced new ways of worship, including the live-streaming of services.
  • 2025: The church is celebrating its 75th anniversary and reflecting on a rich history that began in 1847.
